Vernon Sybesma was born on June 3, 1964, in Sioux Center, Iowa, the youngest of the eight children of John and Jeanette (Scholten) Sybesma.  Vernon spent a happy childhood growing up on the farm, playing with siblings and cousins, riding his bike, and attending basketball games at Western Christian High School and Dordt College.  He started school at Hope Haven School for the Handicapped, graduating in 1985 from River Valley School in Rock Valley, Iowa.
Vernon loved his family and enjoyed his many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Vernon was a lifelong member of First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, Iowa, where he was baptized and made profession of faith.  He particularly delighted in the Friendship Program, where he participated for decades and made many friends.  Vern's family is grateful to all the church and community members who enfolded him into church life by visiting him, inviting him, transporting him, asking him to light the advent candles, and participating in Friendship.
Vernon lived most of his adult life in Ridgebrook in Sioux Center, where the staff and other residents became a second family to him.  They participated in many activities together, including attendance at Dordt's basketball games.  Vernon's work at Parkview in Rock Valley and Brommer's in Sioux Center gave him another large circle of friends.  His family deeply appreciates all the Hope Haven staff who gave Vern such a rich and productive life.
For many years, Vernon worked at Pollema's in Rock Valley.  There, he enjoyed being "one of the guys," working hard and horsing around.  His giant 40th birthday bash there was a highlight.
The last two weeks of his life, Vernon developed another circle of friends at the Sioux Center hospital and Royale Meadows.  The family gratefully thanks the staff there and the hospice staff for easing his way during his last weeks.  A special thank you to Dr. Koelewyn for his Godly guidance in Vern's care.
Vernon very openly shared his faith through his words and his deeds.  He trusted in Jesus and loved the Holy Spirit.  Despite what others might consider a handicapping condition, Vern lived a very fulfilling life.  He had a strong work ethic.  He traveled widely with friends and family.  He could always find a reason to have a party.  He loved unconditionally and forgave freely.  Because of his faith, Vernon brought lots of joy into this world.
Vernon was predeceased by his parents; his brothers Carl and Dwight; and his niece Kelly Soo Sybesma.  Left to cherish his memory are his brothers: Jon (Pat) of Sanborn, Ron (Janelle) of Newton, Kansas, and Les (Lila) of Sioux Center; sisters Helen (George) Andringa of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Rachel (Kevin) Hansen of Clinton, Iowa; sister-in-law Teresa Sybesma of Rock Valley, Iowa; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and many extended family members.
Memorials may be made to Hope Haven or First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center.
