Donald Huygens was born February 20, 1960, in Orange City, IA the son of Clarence M. and JoAnn G. (Van Kalsbeek) Huygens. Don grew up on a farm near Newkirk. He attended Floyd Valley Community School and went on to graduate from Northwestern College in Orange City in 1982. Don was united in marriage to Barbara J. Huitink on June 12, 1979 in Orange City. Following graduation, they moved to Denver, CO where Don worked as an accountant and CPA for 10 years before returning to northwest Iowa. After moving back to Sioux Center, Don did some independent work as a CPA before continuing his career with Groschopp, Inc, as CFO, a post he kept until his passing. Don was united in marriage to Deb Long on January 1, 2002 in Sioux Center.
Don enjoyed traveling with his family and was always up for an adventure, whether it was a short trip up to Minneapolis to try Somali tea, a drive down to Texas to go boating along the Rio Grande, or a tour around Ecuador to try ceviche. He particularly loved road trips and liked to talk with people wherever he went, getting their perspective on life. He was a quiet but curious person with few words but deep thoughts. He also liked keeping up with politics, sports, current events, and was always keeping tabs on the markets.
