Anthony De Haan was born April 19, 1932 in Hawarden, IA the son of Gerrit and (Adrianna De Graff) De Haan. He attended school in Hawarden and was raised on the family farm. On December 23, 1953 Tony was united in marriage to Pauline Schut at the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The couple made their home on farms in the Ireton, Hawarden and Middleburg areas. They were blessed with four children. Tony loved farming and spent most of his life working in areas related to farming. For a time, he ran a dry-cleaning business in Sioux Center. Then he settled into sales and making customers and friends in a wide area around Sioux Center. He truly enjoyed traveling and keeping touch with his customers. He sold tools as well as aerial photography of farms.
Tony was a determined and principled man. He was an avid reader and also enjoyed fishing. He especially enjoyed his 1964 Chevy Impala both driving it and showing it off. He worked hard to build the large toy tractor collection and also found time for crossword puzzles. But mostly Tony loved his family. His grandchildren will hold fond memories of getting “horsey” rides on Grandpa’s foot. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Pauline of Sioux Center; daughter, Evonne (Doug) Taylor of Sioux Center; son, Galen (Lynn) De Haan of Dover Plains, NY; daughters, Diane (Kevin) Flammang of Granville, IA and Pamela (Jeff) Reisma of Sioux Center, IA; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; brother, Cornie De Haan of Inwood, IA; sisters, Judy (Marv) Westra of Jenison, MI, Betty (Warren) Valentine of Sioux Center, IA and Marie Ekdom of Pipestone, MN; brother, Gary (Donna) De Haan of Sioux Center; sister-in-law, Thressa De Haan of Grandville, MI; brother-in-law, Orville Pasma, Byron Center, MI; nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
