Rosella “Sally” Wassink, age 94, of Sioux Center, IA died Sunday, September 9, 2018, at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center, IA.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00AM, Saturday, September 15, 2018 at the Memorial Funeral Home and not as previously announced at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center, with Reverend. Duane Tinklenberg officiating. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 4-7PM with the family present from 5-7PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.
The Wassink Family prefer memorials be directed to the Lighthouse Youth Center of Bethel Christian Reformed Church.
Rosella “Sally” Wassink was born August 26, 1924 to Gysbert and Hilda (Driesen) Blankespoor on a farm near Rock Valley, Iowa. At the age of three, the family moved to a farm between Hull and Boyden, Iowa. She received her 8th grade education at the Sheridan Township Country School. While in 8th grade, she placed first in the Sioux County Spelling Bee.
On November 28, 1944, Sally was joined in marriage to Arend C. Wassink at the Protestant Reformed Church of Hull, Iowa. The couple made their home on the Wassink family farm located north of Sioux Center. Sally was a proud farmwife and loving mother to their five children.
Sally was a longtime member of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church and was active in the Ladies Aid Society. She filled her days making countless meals for the hired hands and neighbors, sewing and assisting on the farm wherever she was needed. After nearly 70 years, on the farm, Sally moved in November 2012 to the Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center. Arend joined her at Royale Meadows in January of 2016 and passed away on November 6, 2016.
She is survived by her five children: daughter, Janice (Roger) Alons of Troy, IL; daughter, Hilaine (Roger) Kempema of Rock Valley, IA; son, Cornie (Deb) Wassink of Alton, IA; daughter, Gloria (Ken) Van Wyhe of Stanton, IA; daughter, Arlis Folkerts of Winnipeg MB, Canada; 16 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren; sister, Henrietta Byker of Hudsonville, MI; numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Arend C. Wassink; her parents; son-in-law, Gerald Folkerts; infant grandsons: Travis Van Wyhe and Matthew Alons; brothers: Henry Blankespoor and Rev. John Blankespoor.
