Arta Bonnema

March 28, 1930 — July 11, 2018

     Arta "Artie" Bonnema, age 88, of Sioux Center, IA died Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at Sanford Sheldon Senior Care in Sheldon, IA.

     Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, July 16, 2018 at Lebanon Christian Reformed Church of rural Sioux Center with Rev. Cory Van Sloten, officiating. 

     Visitation with family present will be held on Sunday, July 15th, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.
 

     Family graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, July 16, at Lebanon Christian Reformed Church Cemetery.

 

Arta Bonnema was born in Sioux Center on March 28, 1930.  She was the second of five children born to Ben and Alberta (Van Maanen) Bleyenberg.  She was raised on a farm near Sioux Center.   Artie attended School through the eighth grade.  She wanted to be a nurse but was needed on the farm.

 In 1950, Artie married John Haverhals Jr.  They lived and farmed on the Haverhals homestead west of Lebanon, Iowa. In addition to her five children and a busy farm life, she usually had a hired man living in their home and he was treated as a part of the family.  Her dinner table frequently included an unexpected guest.

 In 1979, Artie and Johnnie moved into Sioux Center to begin their semi-retirement.  Johnnie died in 1982.

 Artie married Elmer Bonnema in 1992.  The couple lived in Sioux Center and have been longtime members of Lebanon Christian Reformed Church.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She will be remembered for her faith in Christ Jesus, love of family, hospitality and hard work.

 Survivors include her devoted husband of 26 years, Elmer Bonnema of Sioux Center; five children and their families:

 Also left to cherish her memory are three step-daughters: Mary and Stan Goslinga of Orange City; Lavonne and Don Jansen of Grand Rapids, MI; Barb and Allan Van Beek of Orange City; she was blessed to have numerous great-grandchildren; step- grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

 Artie is also survived by three sisters: Wilmynia Jansma of Hull; Bernice and Peter Rynders of Grand Rapids, MI; Lori and John Hoksbergen of Hull and one brother, Alvin and Betty Bleyenberg of Sioux Center.

 She is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, John Haverhals and a granddaughter, Carmen Sybesma.
