Dorothy Wynja, age 95, of Sioux Center, IA, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center, IA.
Memorial service will be 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 9th at the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center, IA.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 9th from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home, then we will travel to the Memory Gardens Cemetery for burial.
Dorothy Elene Wynja was born on February 1, 1922 in Sioux Center, IA, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Schuiteman) Kruizenga. She grew up on a farm one mile east of Sioux Center and later graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1939. Dorothy taught school for a time before meeting and later marrying Wessel Wynja at her parent’s home in Sioux Center on May 9, 1941. Throughout their working years they farmed in the Sioux Center, Lebanon and Ireton areas and raised six children: Verdean, Henry, Ann Dorene, Lynette, Wenda and Laura. Dorothy was a member of the First Reformed Church in Ireton, IA, where she taught Sunday school, hosted new member families and was very active in the Woman’s Guild. In her spare time, she volunteered at Hope Haven with the wheelchair program, and was a 4H leader for a time. She was a member of the Ireton Historical Society and was in a Red Hat Club. She was a very good cook and baker. Some of her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, gardening, tailoring clothing as a seamstress and she loved to travel. Dorothy was also very proud of her family. She will be greatly missed.
Dorothy is survived by her six children: Verdean (Ardith) Wynja of Sioux Center, IA, Henry (Carol) Wynja of Pella, IA, Ann Dorene (Loren) Kleinwolterink of Sioux Center, IA, Lynette (Wayne) Kruse of Le Mars, IA, Wenda (Dave) Horstman of Sioux Center, IA, and Laura (Don) Lowe of Wilson, NC; sixteen grandchildren, forty-three great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wessel; daughter-in-law, Gloria Wynja; three sisters and one brother.
