Donald Brommer was born October 31, 1925 in Sioux Center to James and Jennie (Boone) Brommer.  He was raised in Sioux Center and graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1943.  In March of 1944 Don entered the United States Army and was sent to the European Theatre of Operations.  He was a member of the armed forces that fought in the Battle of the Bulge.  It was during that terribly frigid winter battle that he and other members of his unit were captured by the German forces.  Don spent the next four months as a prisoner of War until the Allies defeated the German forces.  Upon his return home, he joined the family business, Brommer Truck Line.  On December 23, 1946, he was united in marriage to Anne Herweyer.  To this union, one son and three daughters were born.  The couple lived their entire married life in Sioux Center.

After his retirement in 1989, Don and Anne were blessed to enjoy several trips together, among which was a memorable trip to Europe.  These trips allowed them cherished time together and wonderful memories to look back upon.  He was a lifelong member of Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center where he served as an Elder and Deacon.  His church family was very important to him.  Don was on the Sioux Center Fire Dept. for over 50 years.  He served as Post Commander for the American Legion and was a member of the VFW.  Don belonged to the Ex POW IA Great Lakes Chapter and enjoyed many reunions with this special group of men.  He also served on the Conservation Board for over 25 years.  Don always looked forward to golfing with friends and spending time in his shop woodworking.

Don was a good and faithful husband and father.  He loved his family very much and always looked forward to seeing his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  This past Tuesday morning, he passed away at Royale Meadows Care Center at the age of 91.  Donald Brommer will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Donald is survived by his wife of nearly 71 years, Anne Brommer of Sioux Center; son, James (LaVonne) Brommer of Sioux Center, IA; daughters, Diane (Wilmer) Wynia of Ireton, IA, Jeanine (Daryl) Kleinhesselink of Mint Hill, NC and Debra (Doug) Tensen of Cedar Falls, IA; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brother, James (Penny) Brommer of Bend, OR; step-sisters, Angeline Elgersma of Sheldon, IA and Lois Ford of Mesa, AZ; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Brommer; mother and step-father, Jennie and Henry Heemstra; brother, Lester; sister, Thelma (Garth) Madsen; grandson, Brent Ashley; and step-brother, Albert Heemstra.
