Dr. Charles Adams

     Dr. Charles Adams, 70, of Sioux Center went home to be with the Lord on February 24, 2017. He suffered life changing disabilities because of an automobile accident. There will be a visitation at Memorial Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Memorial services will be on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Covenant Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center with Reverend Plockmeyer and Reverend Van Niejenhuis officiating.

     Charles was born to Vincent and Bette Adams in Kearney, NJ on June 22, 1946. He was the oldest of four children. He attended Cambridge Elementary and Saddle Brook High School. Afterwards he attended Newark College of Engineering graduating in 1968. Charlie also received two Masters Degrees one from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Engineering and one from Montclair State College in teaching. Later on he received a Ph. D. in Engineering from The University of Iowa.

     Charles married Pam Spiertz on June 10, 1967. They had three sons. Charlie started working in Connecticut for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft then became a science teacher at Eastern Christian High School in NJ. After this he created and brought into being the engineering program at Dordt College in Sioux Center, IA. During his entire career Charlie was committed to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and attempted to show this in the way he taught and interacted with students. Dordt College acknowledged his contribution by naming the new engineering wing the “The Charles Adams Engineering Center.” Charles was always tackling how Christians should live in our world in ways that praise the God of creation. His thoughts are collected in a book called Exercising Our World View.

     Charlie was a member of Covenant Christian Reformed Church serving as a deacon, elder and catechism teacher. He served at Unity Christian High School on the Board of Education and was President during his term. He was also on the Board of Directors for the Institutes for Christian Studies in Toronto, Canada. Charlie served on the Board of the Siouxland Association for Public Justice. He additionally served as an officer for the Sioux Valley Chapter of ASME.

     Charlie was an avid reader of many books: philosophy, reformed theology, science, poetry, and anything that was good literature. Some of his favorites were Dickens, Dostoyevsky, and Kierkegaard. He also enjoyed taking pictures and movies of his family. Charlie was an excellent wood craftsman and created many fine pieces of furniture and bookcases to create his home library. Charlie’s music collection shows his wide taste from classical to folk music with his largest collection being of his favorite musician Bob Dylan.

     Charles is survived by his wife, Pam; their three sons and 16 grandchildren, Chuck (Kimberly) of Sheboygan and their three children, Jesse, Micah, and Hannah, David of Lynden, WA and his four sons, Luke, Joshua, Andrew and Jordan, and Michael (Kim) of Brandon, SD and their nine children Kinsley, Justus, Malia, Mason, Josiah, Amanuel, Eva, Selena, and Shakira. Charlie is survived by his mother Bette and three brothers, William (Nancy), Robert (Kathy), and Vincent (Angela).

     Charles was preceded in death by his father, his father-in-law, and his mother-in-law.

     In lieu of flowers the Adams family prefers memorial donations to Dordt College Engineering Program, Unity Christian High School, or Sioux Center Christian School building fund.  

     Charles was a delightful person full of the love for the Lord and his creation. He was happy to look at how the Lord designed it and is thankful to the Lord for the many opportunities he has had to see the grandeur of his Creation. He will be greatly missed by his family.
