Katherine Den Herder

     Katherine Den Herder, 93, of Sioux Center died Thursday, January 5, 2017, at Lyon Specialty Care Nursing Home in Rock Rapids, IA.

     Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2017 at First Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Jamie Dykstra officiating. 

     Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

    Visitation with the family present will be held Sunday, January 8th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

     Katherine (Feekes) Den Herder was born on February 25, 1923, to Oepke and Johanna (Sandbulte) Feekes in Carmel, Iowa.  Katherine was raised in Carmel and graduated from the eighth grade at the nearby one-room country school. 

      Katherine worked on the family farm until she met and married Alvin Den Herder on August 29, 1946, after he returned from the service.  Alvin and Katherine started Den Herder Trucking after their marriage and operated it together for 30 years.  She was devoted to her family while managing the business.  

     Katherine always had a pot of coffee on with cake or cookies for anyone who stopped by.  On Sundays after church, family and friends would gather for her latest freshly baked cake.  Nothing pleased her more than having a houseful of visitors.  You could count on Katherine for a spirited game of cards.  She would always find time to sit down for a game of pitch and she was the life of the game.

     Katherine is survived by her four children:  Gene (Susan) of Hollandale, Minnesota, Vern (Diane) of Sioux Center, Marilyn (Robert) Van Demark of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Dan (Rhonda) of Sioux Center; 12 grandchildren: Suzanne  (Scott) Dickson, Michael (Angie), and Bruce (Sari) Den Herder, Matt (Barb) Den Herder and Cari (David) Lemke, Katie (Brian) Reilly, Rob Van Demark and fiancé Laura Jacobson, Sara (Drew) Erie,  Jackson, Aric, and Kalee Den Herder and Marcus (Jamie) Den Herder.  She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren, her sisters-in-law:  Margaret Feekes and Janice Sandbulte, and her “sister” and best friend Dorothy Van Voorst.  

     She was preceded in death by her husband Alvin, her parents, and her brother Arnold.
