Robert “Bob” Vermeer age 85, of Sioux Center, IA died Monday, November 28, 2016 at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon, IA.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 3rd, at 10:30 AM at the Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center with Rev. R. Van Rathbun officiating.
Prayer service for family and friends will be held on Saturday at 9:30 AM at the Central Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.
Visitation will be Friday, December 2nd from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM with family present at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.
In lieu of flowers family requests that memorials be designated to Central Reformed Church and Hope Haven.
Robert James Vermeer was born October 31, 1931 in Sioux Center to Theodore and Janet (Bosveld) Vermeer. He attended Sioux Center schools graduating in 1950. During that time he was active in high school athletics and made All-State as a senior in basketball. He then attended Central College in Pella, IA for two years. Three years later he graduated from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN, where he received his Doctorate of Optometry Degree. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on February 12, 1956 and served his country for two years as an optometrist in Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland with the rank of Second Lieutenant, before returning to Sioux Center to establish his optometrist practice of thirty-eight years.
Bob and Carolin Missall were united in marriage on October 13, 1962. He loved pheasant hunting, fishing in Canada, golfing with friends and most other sports. He was an avid bowler and won a car in 1970. He was also active in many community and church activities as a member of the Central Reformed Church, where he served as a Deacon and Elder. “Doc Bob” was known for his office on Main Street and did yearly school exams for children in the community.
Bob is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Carolin Vermeer of Sioux Center; son, Douglas Jon (wife, Valerie) Vermeer of Pipestone, MN and their three children, Katie (Jason) Bobbin of Rochester, MN, Angela (Evan) Protexter of Madison, WI, and Jacob Vermeer of Chicago, IL; son, Scott Thomas (wife, Debbie) Vermeer and their three children, Nathan, Matthew and Alyssa of Boise, ID; brother, Lou (Stephany) of Sandpoint, ID and fifteen nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Theo Klimstra and Janice Beals and brother, James A. Vermeer.
