A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 7, 2016 at 11:00AM at Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. John Lee, officiating.
Prayer service for family and friends will be held on Monday at 10:00AM at Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2:30-4:30PM, with the family present at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.
The family requests that memorials be made to JFA (Justice For All) Rock Valley, IA.
Herbert Roos was born January 16, 1931, in Edgerton, MN, the fifth of twelve children born to Tom and Dora (Dykstra) Roos. Herbert lived in the Brooten, MN area where he completed the 8th grade at Grove Lake School. He moved with his family to the Ripon, CA area where he attended high school and then helped his father with farming. Herb served in the army from 1952-1954 and was stationed in Germany for much of that time. On March 5, 1954 he married Johanna Sikma in Ripon, CA where their four children were later born. They lived in Salt Lake City, UT for a short time before moving to the Yakima Valley, WA where they made their home in Granger for over 30 years. For the last 15 years, Herbert and Johanna made their home in Sioux Center, IA. Herbert was a steward of the land and enjoyed several entrepreneurial endeavors. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, reading, and biking. He served as elder and Sunday school teacher in various churches, served on the Sunnyside Christian School board, and was active in various civic and farm-related organizations. During his retirement years he was an active volunteer with SOWERs and JFA. Herb lived his life as a servant of God, faithfully witnessing whenever the opportunity arose. Herbert was a member of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, IA. As his health declined he became a resident of Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center where his positive attitude blessed many. He died on November 2, 2016 at the age of 85.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Johanna of Sioux Center, IA; children, Dorenda (Nolan) Van Gaalen of Sioux Center, IA; Jaron (Frances) Roos of League City, TX; Todd (Isabel) Roos of Zillah, WA and Derick (Arnola) Roos of Sioux Center, IA; along with 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; siblings, Adriana Philipsen of Albany, OR; Rena Swier; Nettie Roos; Leona Van Groningen; Eldora Roos all of Ripon, CA; John (Anita) Roos of Turlock, CA; Ted (Frances) Roos of Yakima, WA; Jeanne Dykstra Roos of Santa FE, NM; Lori (David) Livingston of Nevada City, CA; and Ronald Roos of Newman, CA.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, brother Maurice, sister Judith R. Nacion, and 3 brothers-in-law, John Philipsen, John Swier, and Henry Van Groningen.
