Phyllis Meerdink, 73, of Sioux Center, IA, died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 25, 2015, in Mesa, Arizona. A visitation with the family present will be held on Wednesday from 4-8PM with the family present from 5-7PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10:00AM at the Free Grace Reformed Church of Middleburg with Rev. Stephen Breen officiating. Interment will follow the service in Capel Township Cemetery of Middleburg. In lieu of flowers or gifts the Meerdink family prefers memorials to the Luke Society. PPhyllis Elaine (Koerselman) Meerdink was born November 5, 1941 to Cornelius and Elizabeth (Landhuis) Koerselman at Boyden, Iowa. She attended country school and graduated from Sioux Center High School with the Class of 1959. After high school, Phyllis worked as a nurse's aide at the Orange City Hospital. On October 3, 1960, Phyllis was united in marriage to Wayne Glen Meerdink. As a young couple, they lived on a farm four miles east of Sioux Center. In 1971, they purchased a farm located just north of Middleburg, Iowa. Phyllis enjoyed helping on the farm, making meals for the hired men and raising her five children. She also served many years as a cook for Sioux Center schools. Phyllis was a lifelong member of Middleburg Free Grace Reformed Church. She was very involved with various aspects of the church including Christian education. Recently, Phyllis and Wayne enjoyed motorcycle trips, four wheeling, and wintering in Arizona. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 54 years, Wayne Meerdink of Sioux Center, five children: Cheryl and Terry Nieuwkoop of Bakersfield, CA; LouAnn and Glen Zevenbergen of Sioux Falls, SD; Teresa and Leon Punt of Tucson, AZ; Nancy and Mark Bonnema of Sioux Center; Scott and Gina Meerdink of Orange City; 15 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; four siblings and spouses: John and Kathy Koerselman of Sioux Center; Greg and Donna Koerselman of Hospers; Corky and Sherri Koerselman of Sibley; Vivian and John Koolstra of Pella and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Vincent Koerselman; two grandchildren: Matthew Zevenbergen and Karli Punt.
