Florence Den Herder

Florence Den Herder, 90, of Sioux Center, IA, died Saturday, February 14, 2015, at her Sioux Center residence. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6:30-8PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Thursday at 1:30PM at the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 2:30PM at the First Reformed Church with Rev. Travis Else officiating. The Den Herder family prefers memorials to Words of Hope. Florence Edith (Meendering) Den Herder was born on November 17, 1924 to Gerrit and Grace (Roskam) Meendering in Springfield, South Dakota. She was raised on farms near Springfield, Doon, Iowa, and Sioux Center, Iowa. She received education through the eighth grade. On July 25, 1947, Florence married Glenn Den Herder in Sioux Center. The couple made their home on a farm west of Sioux Center where they milked cows and raised four children. When her children grew older, Florence worked in the laundry of the Sioux Center Community Hospital. She is a member of First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, where she was active in the women's guild. Florence was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. One of her great joys was spending time with her grandchildren. She would often feed them breakfast while they waited for the school bus in the morning. She was always ready to play a friendly, yet competitive, game of UNO. She and Glenn enjoyed going on fishing trips with friends and camping trips with family. After Glenn passed away she enjoyed traveling to the Netherlands and various places in the United States with her daughter, Glenda. Florence also enjoyed painting scenic pictures which she would often present to family and friends. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Linda and Arlen Doorenbos of Boyden, IA; Terrill and Debora Den Herder of Grandville, MI; Glenda and Steve Hansen of Sioux City, IA; Robert and Suzanne Den Herder of Sioux Center; 10 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; an infant daughter, Gwen Lynn; her parents; grandson-in-law, Jason Young; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Harold and Johanna Meendering; Andrew and Ella Meendering; Albert G. and Harriet Meendering and one sister and brother-in-law, Cynthia and Les Nieuwenhuis.
