Sylvia Vlieger, 89, of Sioux Center, IA, died Thursday, November 20, 2014, at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 3-8PM, with the family present from 3-5PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A family prayer service will be held on Monday at the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens of Sioux Center. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 12:00PM at the First Reformed Church with Rev. Travis Else officiating. The Vlieger family prefers memorials to Sioux Center Home Health & Hospice. Sylvia Vlieger, age 89, died after a four month battle with cancer at Royale Meadows in Sioux Center Iowa, with her children at her side. Sylvia was born on July 6, 1925 on the farm in O'Brien County, Iowa to George and Josie (Tamminga) Vander Tuig. On August 17, 1948 Sylvia married William Vlieger at the Sheldon Christian Reformed Church. Over the next 14 years, Bill and Sylvia welcomed their four children: Judy, Mary, Bill, and Jo Ann. Sylvia worked as a nurses aide at the Sioux Center Community Hospital and as a volunteer for hospice, but her greatest joy in life were her four children, eight grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. After her husband's death in 1975, Sylvia spent much of her time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing cards and reading. Her grandchildren: Ben, Katie, Stacy, Andy, Michael, Angie Lynn, Angie May, and Travis will remember their grandmother for her loving energy, Canasta skills, and her world famous potato salad. Sylvia is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law: Judy and Ron Buseman of Sioux Falls, SD, JoAnn and Vern Wichers of Le Mars, IA; son-in-law, Steven DeYoung of Holland, MI; daughter-in-law, Patti Vlieger of Green Bay, WI; 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; one sister, Jessie Koelewyn of Hanford, CA and three sisters-in-law: Faye Vander Tuig of Springfield, SD, Bonnie Vander Tuig of San Jose, CA and Ella Mae Vande Burgt of Hull. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her daughter, Mary DeYoung; son, Bill Vlieger; great-grandson; Ethan Thompson, three brothers and sisters-in-law: Mitchell and Sue Vander Tuig, Wilbur and Berendena Vander Tuig, Gerald and Esther Vander Tuig; two brothers: George and Kenneth Vander Tuig; four infant siblings and two brothers-in-law, Arie Scheeringa and Pete Koelewyn.
