Gladys Verrips, 95, of Sioux Center, IA died Thursday, August 21, 2014, at Rock Rapids Health Centre in Rock Rapids, IA. A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 11AM at Central Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. R. Van Rathbun officiating. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. Visitation with the family present will be held on Saturday, August 30th prior to the service from 10-11AM at Central Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Arrangements entrusted to the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. Gladys Verrips was born July 10, 1919 to Theodore and Johanna (Heusinkveld) Abma in Springfield, South Dakota. Her family later moved to Sioux Center, Iowa. In 1945, Gladys married Gary Verrips in Sioux Center. The couple lived in Sioux Center until 1955, at which time they purchased a resort on Big Sandy Lake near McGregor in northern Minnesota. They owned Verrips Resort for 22 years until 1977 when they sold the resort and retired. The couple returned to Sioux Center before becoming residents of the Rock Rapids Health Centre. She worked at a variety jobs during her life including Central Cafe, Wandscheer Mfg. and Sam's Variety in Sioux Center, several jobs in Sioux City, Riverside, California and at Verrips Resort until her retirement. Gladys loved to garden, knit, couchette, do picture puzzles, crosswords and play solitaire. She enjoyed playing piano and organ. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She cherished time with all her family, relatives and friends. She also loved to cook, always preparing and serving delicious food. Gladys was a member of Central Reformed Church until she moved to Minnesota. There she joined the United Methodist Church and later First Reformed Church in Boyden. Gladys is survived by two sons: Donald Verrips of Walton, Kentucky and Stanley Verrips and his wife, Sylvia of Boise, Idaho; two grandchildren: Jesse Verrips and his wife, Casandra of Boise, Idaho and Lael Verrips of Sioux City, Iowa; five great-grandchildren: Richard, Laney, Henry, Thomas and Blake and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; and two sisters and brother-in-laws: Josephine and Gradus Verrips and Harriet and Chester Sitter.
