Gene Moss, 82, of Sioux Center, IA died Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 5-7PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10:30AM at the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Travis Else officiating. Interment will follow the funeral in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. In lieu of flowers or gift items, the Moss family prefers memorials to Inspiration Hills Camp and Retreat Center, Northwestern College or First Reformed Church of Sioux Center Benevolent Fund. Eugene Merle Moss was born on a farm east of Rock Valley, Iowa on May 6, 1932. He grew up on the family farm North of Boyden, Iowa. As a boy he attended Free Grace Reformed Church in Middleberg, Iowa and graduated from Newkirk High School. On August 19, 1953, he married Marla Evonne Van Roekel the couple enjoyed 61 years of marriage and were blessed with two children and six grandchildren. One month after their marriage, Eugene began his military service in the US Army. He served as an airplane mechanic at Fort Sam Huston in San Antonio, Texas during the Korean War. This instilled a passion for flying and Eugene enjoyed a lifelong hobby as a private pilot. He was honorably discharged in 1955. Gene was a successful agribusiness man. He served fourteen years as a district sales manager for MoorMan's Feeds. Later he founded Siouxland Vet Supply; a business he later sold and managed for the new owners. Gene completed his career with Krueger Seed Company, a job he loved. Eugene was an active leader in the church, serving in many capacities. He was the founding president of Inspiration Hills Camp and Retreat Center; serving as the president for 12 years. Other activities include serving as the vice president of consistory, youth group leader and Sunday school teacher. All his life Gene served many young people seeking help or advice. Gene loved to fish, golf, hunt, and attend Northwestern College athletic events. He also found enjoyment in sharing a cup of coffee with friends at Hardee's. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Marla Moss of Sioux Center; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Bob Burkhardt of Lincoln, NE; son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Rhonda (Cleveringa) Moss of Sioux City, IA; 6 grandchildren: Joseph and Kimberly Burkhardt, Andrew Burkhardt, Corey Moss, Micah and Sarah Moss, Madison Moss; sisters and brothers-in-law: Joan and Herlon Vander Schaaf, brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Bernice Moss of Sioux Center, Marilyn and Gerald Bruxvoort of Orange City; brother-in-law, Marion Wielenga of Orange City and numerous nieces and nephews. Gene is preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law: Albert and Aileen Moss, Peter and Darlene Moss; sister and brother-in-law, Charlene and Rodney Vanden Brink, sister, Agnes Wielenga and grandson, Adam Ross Burkhardt.
