Tunis W. Cleveringa

Tunis Cleveringa, 85, of Sioux Center, IA died Friday, June 6, 2014, at Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-8PM, with the family present from 2-4PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Monday at 10:00AM at the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 11:00AM at the First Reformed Church with Rev. Travis Else officiating. The Cleveringa family prefers memorials to First Reformed Church. Tunis W. Cleveringa was born February 8, 1929 to Fred and Fanny (Schut) Cleveringa on a farm north of Sioux Center. He attended country school and graduated from Sioux Center Community High School in 1947. Tunis took on the nickname "Doc" when he served in the United States Army as a medic during the Korean War. After his discharged he returned to Sioux Center and worked for Den Herder Trucking and John and John's Butcher Shop. For the next 35 years, Tunis was employed as a fuel tank wagon and transport driver for CO-OP Gas and Oil in Sioux Center. On April 28, 1955, Tunis married Ila De Boer in Sioux Center. The couple made their home in Sioux Center and was blessed with two daughters: Ruth and Lora. Tunis was a lifelong member of First Reformed Church of Sioux Center where he served as a deacon and an elder. After his retirement, Tunis enjoyed golf and vacationing at Okoboji. He loved spending time with family especially with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Ila Cleveringa of Sioux Center; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Scott Boyer of West Chicago, IL; granddaughter, Sara Boyer or Naperville, IL; grandson, Brett Boyer of Nashville, TN; two brothers and sisters-in-law: John and Marjorie Cleveringa and Garold and Chris Cleveringa all of Sioux Center; three sisters and brothers-in-law: Wilma and Harry Kraayenbrink, Margaret and Lee Erickson all of Sioux Center, Fran and Denny Vollink of Hull; sister-in-law, Theresa Cleveringa of Sioux Center; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Norma and Marvin Korver of LeMars and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Irwin and Karen De Boer of Sioux Center and numerous nieces and nephews. Those who preceded him in death were his daughter, Lora Cleveringa; grandsons: Michael and Matthew Boyer; his parents, Fred and Fanny Cleveringa; brother, Nelson Cleveringa and father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Henrietta De Boer.
