Johanna De Weerd, 84, of Sioux Center, IA died Sunday, April 6, 2014, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital. A visitation with the family present will be held on Wednesday from 10:00-11:00AM at the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11:00AM at the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Travis Else officiating. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. The De Weerd family prefers memorials to First Reformed Church or Sioux Center Home Health and Hospice. Johanna De Weerd was born November 18, 1929 to Gerrit and Anna (Draayer) De Weerd in Maurice, Iowa. She was raised on the family farm and attended Center Township country school through the eighth grade. Jo lived, with her sister, Ethel on the De Weed family farmstead near Maurice for 83 years. She loved the outdoors and thoroughly enjoyed farming. Johanna and Ethel faithfully took care of the family farm for many years. They raised crops, milked cows and feed hogs. Jo retired from farming in 1991. In 2013, Jo and Ethel moved into Franken Manor in Sioux Center. Jo had a great love for children and holding the new babies in the family. Children always brought a smile to her face. Jo was known for making toys (with Ethel's help) for her great nephews and nieces and their children. Jo was a lifetime member of First Reformed church of Sioux Center. She is survived by her sister, Ethel De Weerd of Sioux Center; three nephews and their wives: Gilbert and Mildred De Weerd of Ireton, Iowa, Wayne and Delma De Weerd and Rodney and Joanne De Weerd all of Sioux Center; as well as numerous great and great-great nephews and nieces. Jo is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Albert and his wife, Rose De Weerd and Edward De Weerd; one sister, Minnie De Weerd and a great nephew, Terry De Weerd.
