Howard Zeutenhorst, 76 of rural Hawarden, IA died unexpectedly Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at his rural Hawarden home. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-8PM, with family present from 2-4PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A prayer service for family and friends will be held Monday at 10:15AM at the Lebanon Christian Reformed Church of rural Sioux Center, IA with Cory Van Sloten officiating. Interment will follow the prayer service in the Lebanon Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Monday at 11AM at the Lebanon Christian Reformed Church of rural Sioux Center with Rev. Duane Tinklenberg officiating. The Zeutenhorst family prefer memorials be directed to the Lebanon Christian Reformed Church building fund. Howard Junior Zeutenhorst was born July 31, 1937 to Bernard and Johanna (De Jager) Zeutenhorst in Alton, Iowa. He was raised in Alton and received his education through the eighth grade. As a young man, Howard moved to the Lebanon area in 1953 and worked for the Haverhals family. He served in the United States Army Reserve for 8 years. Howard married Fran Bolkema on November 16, 1960 in Rock Valley, Iowa. He was a longtime member of the Lebanon Christian Reformed Church. He spent many years as a deacon and on the buildings and grounds committee. Howard also served on the Western Christian and Memorial Funeral Home board of directors. Howard enjoyed farming and spending time puttering around in his shed. As a young man he enjoyed playing softball and bowling. In the last few years, you could often find him playing snooker with friends at the All Seasons Center in Sioux Center. He loved to watch his grandchildren participate in their activities as well as playing cards with family and friends. Howard also enjoyed watching Minnesota Twins baseball games on television. Howard lovingly served as a full-time care giver for Fran before her death on November 2, 2010. Howard is survived by five children and their families: Deb and Mark Swets of Carmel, IA and their children: Jackie and Seth Huizenga of Carmel and their children: Addisyn, Averi and Alli Huizenga Jamie Swets of Carmel and Tyler and Aggie Swets of Carnes, IA Darryl and Christy Zeutenhorst of Hawarden and their children: Jeremy Zeutenhorst of Hull, Jesse Zeutenhorst and Josie Zeutenhorst Dan Zeutenhorst of Hawarden, and his son: Brendan Zeutenhorst Diane and Jack Vander Stoep of Dublin, OH and their children: Emma, Sophie and Jackson Vander Stoep Tim Zeutenhorst (Christa Kelhower) of Orange City and their children: Benjamin, Samantha and Sydney Zeutenhorst, Caitlin and Jaren Kelhower He is also survived by six siblings: Joan and James Denver of Gravette, AR, Randy and Karen Zeutenhorst of Winterset, IA, Russ and Eileen Zeutenhorst of Farmingdale, NJ, Stan and Becky Zeutenhorst of Brooklyn, IA, L. Johnathan Marven, Las Vegas, NV, Bob and Beth Zeutenhorst of Maurice; brother-in-law, Gerald Conner of Farmingdale, NJ; sisters-in-law, Karla Zeutenhorst of Yankton, SD, Bernice Ymker of Sioux Falls, SD; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Rodney and Hester Bolkema; several nieces and nephews and life-long friends, Gerrit and Eunice Teunissen of Rock Valley. He is preceded in death by his wife, Fran Zeutenhorst; his parents; a sister, Ruth Conner and brother, Larry Zeutenhorst.
