Phyllis Van Den Hul, 66, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Sioux Center, IA, died Thursday, December 12, 2013, at Sanford USD Medical Center of Sioux Falls, SD. A visitation with family present will be Monday from 5-8PM, at the Prairie Hills Covenant Church, 2500 S. Powder House Rd, Sioux Falls, SD 57110. A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Tuesday at 10:00AM at the New Life Reformed Church of Sioux Center, Iowa. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11:00AM at New Life Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Pastor Laurel Buwalda officiating. A concert celebrating Phyllis' life will be held at 1:30PM on Tuesday at New Life Reformed Church featuring various gospel groups. The Van Den Hul family request no flowers or gift items. Phyllis Ann (Weerheim) Van Den Hul was born September 28, 1947 in Rock Rapids, Iowa to Phillip and Ella (Feikema) Weerheim. Her early years were spent on a Larchwood, Iowa farm. When she was 7 years old the Weerheim family moved to Rock Rapids. She attended Central Lyon High School where she was a "Flag Girl". She enjoyed sports and played softball. She loved to cruise in her dad's car, often sneaking it out of the garage after her parents went to bed. She married Jake Van Den Hul on July 22, 1966. The couple lived in the Rock Rapids area early in their marriage. Most of their married life they lived in Sioux Center, Iowa. Over the years, Phyllis worked at several banks and had a day care business in her home. She was instrumental in starting a domestic violence agency in Sioux Center, which she ran for 14 years. In 2000, Phyllis and Jake moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Later in life, she became a para-legal and worked for several lawyers. She also worked as a receptionist at a real estate office. Her final employment was at the Mill End Textiles fabric store, where she worked to feed her addiction to sewing and quilting. Phyllis enjoyed sewing and quilting; she was proud to own a quilting machine. One of her other passions in life was music. She loved to sing and play the piano. She was part of several gospel vocal groups over the years including: The Van Den Hul's, The Masters Voice Quartet and most recently the group, Relative Harmony along with her husband, Jake and her cousin, Carol Patch. She had a passion for riding motorcycles and trikes. She had her own motorcycle license and even rode one year to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Phyllis passed away on Thursday December 12, 2013 at the Sanford USD Medical Center of Sioux Falls after valiantly fighting ovarian cancer for the last few years. She is survived by her husband, Jake Van Den Hul of Sioux Falls, SD; a son and daughter-in-law, Troy and Cindy Van Den Hul of Sioux Center; two daughters: Sharri Wheeler of Sioux Falls and Jacki White of Rock Valley; 10 grandchildren: Lindsey and Nick Vande Kieft, Brittany Slothouber, Kelsey Van Den Hul, Bryce Darnell, Jaycee Darnell, Sage Darnell, Chantel White, Jada White, Jacob White, Blake Moore; 3 great grandchildren: Jordan, Carter and Joanna. Phyllis is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Esther and Jack Altman of Rock Rapids; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Jill Weerheim of Milford, IA and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Cornie and Christine Van Den Hul and a grandson-in-law, Joe Slothouber.
