Harriet Vermeer (Mrs. Elmer Vermeer), 94, of Sioux Center, IA died Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 1-8PM, with the family present from 1-3PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Monday at 10:00AM at the New Life Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 11AM at New Life Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Rick Van Ravenswaay officiating. The Vermeer family prefer memorials be directed to the new hospital project, c/o the Sioux Center Community Hospital Foundation. Harriet Lenora (De Boer) Vermeer was born on July 27, 1918 to Henry T. and Margaret "Maggie" De Boer in Sioux Center, Iowa. She was raised in Sioux Center where she received her education, graduating from Sioux Center High School. Harriet was united in marriage to Elmer H. Vermeer on December 28, 1938 in Sioux Center. Following their marriage the couple lived at Grand Rapids, Michigan where Harriet worked for a paint company. Later, they settled in Sioux Center where she worked at the Shopper office with Elmer. She also worked at the Sioux Center Hospital as a Nurse's Aide, and for many years Harriet worked at Bosch's Clothing in Sioux Center. In her early years, she was active in teaching Sunday School to small children as a member of First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. Harriet later became a charter member of New Life Reformed Church. At New Life, she loved being involved in the quilters group, as well as, Bible Study groups. Harriet enjoyed gardening, home-making, reading and was an excellent seamstress. Survivors include her four children and their spouses: Paula and Dean Van Roekel of Sioux City; Buzz (Bruce) and Mary Vermeer of Wahpeton; Mark and Sherie Vermeer of Ankeny; Lisa and Jake Rus of Maurice; her 10 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Janeva Vermeer of Sioux Center and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ken and Jean Vermeer of Buena Park, CA. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Elmer; twin sister and brother-in-law, Florence and Robert Nykamp; sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Harlan Mulder; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Jim and Grace De Boer, Evert and Madge De Boer and Robert and Leola De Boer.
