Catherine Moerman

Catherine Moerman 92, of Rock Valley, IA died Sunday, February 17, 2013, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley. A visitation will be held on Friday from 4-8:30PM with the family present from 7-8:30PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Saturday at 9:30AM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center with interment to follow in the Carmel Cemetery of Rural Sioux Center. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11:00AM at the Rock Valley First Reformed Church with Rev. Garry Nyenhuis officiating. The Moerman family prefer memorials be directed to the Cornerstone Prison Church in Sioux Falls, SD c/o Rev. Steve Moerman, Box 36, Worthing, SD 57077. Catherine Moerman, was born Sept. 4, 1920, near Carmel, to William and Cornelia (Hulshof) Feekes. Catherine married Peter Moerman, Jr. on Jan. 31, 1941 at her parents' home on the farm. Pete served in the Army during WWII, leaving her expecting their first child. Catherine and Karen anxiously waited 2 1/2 years for him to return and start their lives together. They lived most of their lives in Iowa and the Midwest, moving to Tucson, AZ for 35 years for her health. They returned to Iowa six years ago to finish their journey of life. Catherine loved talking to people, finding out about their lives. She was a hard worker, helping on the farm, helping anyone who needed a meal or a helping hand. She loved playing games, cards, reading, doing Word Searches and had a great love for crocheting. Everyone in the family received many of her handmade gifts. She also loved when the little ones of the family came to visit. These last years have brought much physical pain, but as her mother often said and Catherine often said, "It could be worse." Pete and Catherine recently celebrated 72 years together. They were grateful for still being together. She is survived by her husband, Peter and their five children: Karen (Russ) Calsbeek of Rock Valley, Roger (Sheryl) Moerman of Kennewick, WA, Wilma (Doug) Kooima of Rock Valley, Mary (Tom) Heeringa of Tucson, AZ, Debra (John) Towne of Benson, AZ. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; six step grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 27 step great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren and seven step great-great grandchildren. Catherine is also survived by her brother Ted Feekes of Hawarden, IA; three sisters: Nellie Vander Vliet, Edna Van Abbema, both of Rock Valley and Mina Mouw of Sioux Center. Those who she joined in heaven are her parents; her grandson, Seth Sparkman and her step granddaughter, Cindy Edwards.
