Wayne Vander Schaaf, 73, of Orange City, IA died Saturday, February 16, 2013, at Heritage House Care Center in Orange City. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-8PM with family present from 5-7PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Tuesday at 1PM at the First Reformed Church of Boyden, Iowa with Rev. Matthew Draffen officiating. Interment will follow the prayer service in Sheridan Township Cemetery of Boyden. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2:30PM at the First Reformed Church of Orange City, Iowa with Rev. Mark Haverdink officiating. Wayne Rallyn Vander Schaaf, was born, December 8, 1939 to John R. and Harriet (Vermeer) Vander Schaaf near Sioux Center, Iowa. Wayne was raised in the Sioux Center and Middleburg area. Wayne attended Capel #5 County School thru 8th grade, and graduated high school from Northwestern Academy. He continued his education at Northwestern College receiving a Bachelors in Elementary Education Degree in 1961. In the middle of his college education he enlisted in the Air Force and later moved to the Reserves as a medic. In 1967, he earned his Master's degree in Elementary Administration from the University of South Dakota. On August 11, 1961, he married Sharon Rose Muyskens at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. They made their first home in Hartley, Iowa where Wayne taught for 3 years. They then moved to Boyden, Iowa where Wayne taught Fifth and Sixth Grade Math and Science for 36 years. Wayne also taught some night classes at Northwestern College and during the summer worked for a farmer. Wayne and Sharon were blessed with 3 children, a daughter and 2 sons. Wayne loved the Lord, his wife and his family. He shared his faith through his words and example. He served the Lord faithfully throughout his life by being a great husband, dad and grandpa. His desire was that his children and grandchildren come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior. At the First Reformed Church in Boyden Wayne served as a Sunday school teacher, choir director and choir member. He was also a deacon and elder as well as sound and video technician. He served on the boards of the Harmony Youth Home and the Memorial Funeral Home. Wayne loved music and loved to sing. He was part of the Sheldon Barbershop chorus and sang in the Journeymen Quartet for many years. In 2008, Wayne and Sharon moved to a duplex in Orange City. In 2010, Wayne moved to the Heritage House, and he passed away there on February 16, 2013 reaching the age of 73 years, 2 months and 8 days. Wayne is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sharon Rose; 3 children: Sheryl (Evan) Grotenhuis of Newkirk, Brent (Mary Jo) Vander Schaaf of Three Rivers, MI, Douglas (Lisa) Vander Schaaf of New Lenox, Il; 8 grandchildren: Karissa (Mike) De Jager of Platte, SD, Alicia (Collin) Vande Hoef of Whiting, IA, Josh Grotenhuis, Tyler Vander Schaaf, Nicole Vander Schaaf, Ashley Vander Schaaf, Alissa Vander Schaaf, Andrew Vander Schaaf. Wayne is also survived by 10 brothers and sisters: Wilma (Gilbert) Schelling of Orange City, Milton (Joan) Vander Schaaf of Hardwick, MN, Herlon (Joan) Vander Schaaf of Sioux Center, Henrietta Vander Broek of Orange City, June (Harold) Driesen of Rock Valley, Audrey (Ken) Van Grouw of Orange City, Delbert (Elda) Vander Schaaf of Orange City, Roger (Charlotte) Vander Schaaf of Lake Wilson, MN, Helen (Don) Statema of Hospers, Arlys (Ed) Zomermaand of Sioux Center; sister-in-law Betty Vander Schaaf along with numerous nieces and nephews. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Vander Schaaf and brother-in-law, Bud Vander Broek.
