Agnes Brawner

Agnes Brawner, 91, of Galva, IL formerly of Sioux Center, IA died Thursday, January 3, 2013, at the Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, IL. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, January 7 at the First United Methodist Church of Galva. Rev. Ann Champion will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 PM, Sunday, January 6 at Rux Funeral Home in Galva, IL. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 11AM at the West Lawn Cemetery of Orange City. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church of Galva or to the Galva Public Library. She was born December 14, 1921 in Middleburg, IA, the daughter of Neal and Johanna DeWit. She married Glenn I. Luymes on May 1, 1945 and he died December 20, 1956. She later married Howard Brawner on February 18, 1972 and he preceded her in death on August 5, 1978. Surviving are her children, Keith A. (Margo) Luymes of Galva, Nancy J. McClay of Knoxville, IL, Lynn E. (Chet) Travis of Tremont, IL and Carol A. (Peter) King of Basalt, CO, her step-sons, Donald (Helen) Brawner of Peoria and Mac (Brenda) Brawner of Virginia, nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, a number of step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren, two brothers, Julius DeWit and Eugene (Norma) DeWit, both of Canby, MN and two sisters, Helen (Loyd) Vermeer and Edith Lubach, both of Sioux Center, IA. Also preceding her in death were her parents, brother and sister-in-law, James (Maria) DeWit of Holstein, IA, sister-in-law, Johanna DeWit of Canby, MN, her sister and brother-in-law, Adrianna (Eugene) Kuyper of Arkadelphia, AR, brother-in-law, Howard Lubach of Sioux Center, IA and brother-in-law and his wife, Les (Evie) Luymes of Newport Beach, CA. Agnes was a 1939 graduate of Sioux Center High School. She taught in one room schools for several years prior to marriage. In 1950 she and Glenn moved to Galva where Glenn began his veterinary medicine practice and Agnes became a full time homemaker raising their children. She was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Galva where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and one of its circles and had served in many offices in her church. She was an active member of PEO Chapter BR. Agnes enjoyed playing bridge and golf in her earlier years. She enjoyed watching sports, particularly the University of Illinois and Iowa State and her grandchildren's sports. She was an avid reader and served as a reading tutor for many years.
