Stanley Yates, 76, of Sioux Center, IA died Saturday, October 13, 2012, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital. A visitation will be held Monday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 5-7PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 1:30PM at Peace Lutheran Church of rural Sioux Center with Reverend Glen Peterson officiating. Interment will follow in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery of rural Sioux Center. The Yates family prefers memorial donations to The Compassionate Friends, Sioux Center Home Health & Hospice or Peace Lutheran Church. Stanley Leland Yates, son of Merle and Edith (Lindenman) Yates was born on the family farm at rural Ireton, Iowa on February 8, 1936. He was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith at the Ireton Methodist Church. He attended country school in Center Township. He graduated from Sioux Center High School with the Class of 1953. Stanley married Alice Joanne Peterson in Hawarden, Iowa on June 1, 1958. Alice passed away on October 17, 1987. Stanley started working for his uncle Jesse Yates at the ASC office in 1953. In 1958 he began to farm and raise livestock which he did until 2000. He worked at Bomgaars in Sioux Center for the past 15 years. Stanley married Judy (Visser) Punt at Peace Lutheran Church, rural Sioux Center on November 23, 1991. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church of rural Sioux Center for 45 years. As a dedicated member he served on the church council, as deacon, church treasurer and president of Brotherhood. He also operated the sound system. Stanley participated on the first board of the Sioux County Pork Producers, with the Sioux County Extension Council, beginning board of Forward Steps which is now known as Life After Loss, as a hospice volunteer in the bereavement sector, treasurer for TCF (The Compassionate Friends) and was an active member of THEOS and THEOS Alumni. In 1993 he was honored to receive the Greater Hospice Volunteer of the Year award for Sioux County. In his spare time, Stanley could be found doing woodworking or working on engines; he loved to tinker. He was well known for his gardening ability and the produce he shared. He was a great cook and was especially fond of grilling outdoors. Stan is survived by wife, Judy Yates of Sioux Center; three daughters and their families: Teresa (Yates) Vande Pol and husband, Barry of Hawarden and their children and families: Brandi Phillips and fiance, Kelly Keehn and Caden, Brittany Van Aartsen and husband, Josh and Macyn, Brooke Vande Pol; Cynthia (Yates) Reid of Sioux Center and her children and families: Dustin Reid, Jackson and Vanessa, Dylan Reid and friend, Amber Brummel, David Reid; Lisa (Yates) Vanden Brink and husband, Alan of Ireton and their children and families: Miranda Floen and husband, Zach, Gina Matthews and husband, Paul and Liam and Felix, Alec Vanden Brink and wife, Becky and Tekoah and Hezekiah, Ariel Vanden Brink and friend, Mitch Johnson; three step children and their families: Orlin Punt and wife, Amy of Langford, SD and their children: Zachary, Joshua, Ryan and Jacob; Bill Punt and wife, Cathy of Alton and their children: Cheri Punt and friend, Justin Wenzel, Brad Punt and wife, Roslyn, Catherine Punt and fiancé, Nathan Kooiker; Teresa (Punt) Hoekstra and her husband, Lyle of Sheldon, IA and their children: Kyle and Samantha. He is also survived by two brothers: Lloyd Yates and his wife, Barbara of Seattle, WA and Wesley Yates and his wife, Janet of Davis, CA; the Peterson in-laws: George and Shirley Rehder of Hawarden, John and JoAnn Peterson of Johnstown, CO, Barb and Phil Schansberg of Delano, MN and Janet Stewart of Hermitage, TN. Stanley was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Alice; his daughter, Maria Yates; sister-in-law, Joy Yates; stepdaughter, Cheryl Punt; stepson, Brian Punt; two step grandchildren: Anthony and Erica Hoekstra and sister-in-law, Mary Rehder.
