Berdena Vander Ziel, 89, of Sioux Center, IA died Monday, September 17, 2012, at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center. A visitation will be held on Friday from 10AM to 11AM at the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11AM at First Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Carl Klompien officiating. Interment will follow the funeral service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. The Vander Ziel family prefer memorials be directed to Sioux Center Home Health and Hospice. Berdena Vander Ziel, daughter of Chris and Ida (Kamerman) Draayer was born March 29, 1923. As a child, her family lived in various parts of Iowa including: Sioux Center, Ireton, Maurice and Lebanon. They also spent time in Maynard, Gluek and Clara City, Minnesota. On, December 20, 1945, Berdena was joined in marriage to Paul Vander Ziel in Orange City, Iowa in the chapel of the First Reformed Church. To this union 6 children were born: Ileen, Leona, Ken, Judy, Don and Joann. Paul died, December 31, 1965, at the age of 45. Berdena was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. She had a fondness for vegetable and flower gardens and loved making homemade breads. Her hands were often busy with embroidery work or sewing projects. Berdina is survived by her children: Ileen Vander Ziel of Sioux Center, Leona and Dennis King of Huntington Beach, California, Ken and Jolene Vander Ziel of Rock Valley, Judy and Pete Hoekstra of Hudsonville, Michigan, Don Vander Ziel of Orange City and Joann and LeRoy Walburg of Sioux Center; 8 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Those who preceded her in death are her husband, Paul Vander Ziel; her parents, Chris and Ida Draayer and a sister, Wilma Tiemersma.
