James "Jim" Vander Schaaf, 80, of Orange City, IA died Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A prayer service for family and friends will be held Saturday at 12:30PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2PM at First Christian Reformed Church of Orange City, IA with Rev. Mark Vande Zande officiating. The Vander Schaaf family prefers memorials to the First Christian Reformed Church Multimedia Fund. James Owen Vander Schaaf was born October 2, 1931 to John R. and Harriet (Vermeer) Vander Schaaf near Sioux Center, Iowa. Jim was raised in the Sioux Center and Middleburg area. On January 29, 1954 he married Betty Mae Vugteveen in Rock Valley. Jim and Betty were blessed with a daughter and two sons. They farmed first near Ireton and later settled on the farm in the Middleburg area. Jim was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Ireton and later the First Christian Reformed Church of Orange City. As a young man he sang in the Vander Schaaf Family quartet, enjoyed playing cards and woodworking and had a special interest in Oliver tractors. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Betty Vander Schaaf of Orange City; daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Harold Dykstra of Hudson, SD; son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Pam Vander Schaaf of Alton; daughter-in-law, Gail Vander Schaaf-Van Grouw and husband, Arlan of Orange City; six grandchildren: Rebecca (Graig) Jacobson of Rock Valley, Joseph (Jill) Dykstra of Lennox, SD, Nicholas Dykstra of Hudson, Joshua Vander Schaaf of Hanford, CA, Justin (Angela) Vander Schaaf of Alton, Jordan (friend, Marianna Jensen) Vander Schaaf of Le Mars; six great-grandchildren: Kendra, Jillian, Gaven, Mason and Abby Dykstra and Kyler Vander Schaaf. Jim is also survived by eleven brothers and sisters: Wilma and Gilbert Schelling of Orange City, Milton and Joan Vander Schaaf of Hardwick, MN, Herlon and Joan Vander Schaaf of Sioux Center, Henrietta Vander Broek of Orange City, June and Harold Driesen of Rock Valley, Audrey and Ken Van Grouw of Orange City, Wayne and Sharon Vander Schaaf of Orange City, Delbert and Elda Vander Schaaf of Orange City, Roger and Charlotte Vander Schaaf of Lake Wilson, MN, Helen and Don Statema of Hospers, Arlys and Ed Zomermaand of Sioux Center along with numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Brian Vander Schaaf and brother-in-law, Bud Vander Broek.
