Dorothy Boeyink was born Aug. 13, 1916, in Sioux Center to William and Pearl (De Zeeuw) Van de Brake. Graduating as the class valedictorian in Sioux Center, she began teaching elementary school, traveling each day to rural one-room schoolhouse. Later in her life, she spent a number of years teaching in area country schools in Welcome 4 Township and Carmel. She married Henry Louis (Louie) Boeyink on Sept. 15, 1936, beginning a career as a mother to four sonsRobert, Joel, David, and Markthat spanned more than three decades. Dorothy's faith was an important part of her daily life. As a member of the Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center, she taught Sunday School and catechism for many years. Later she became one of the founding members of Christ Community Church. Her husband, Louis, died on July 12, 1979. Although a difficult loss for Dorothy, she created a second life for herself after his death in the Sioux Center Public Library, working for 35 years in a variety of roles. She loved books and spent many happy days leading the children's story hour. When she finally retired, she was in her 80s. During her life she enjoyed making quilts for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also loved golf, preferring an afternoon on the course to a day of cleaning house. In 2001, she moved to Crown Pointe, a new retirement community in Sioux Center, helping to establish a small lending library. Her health began to deteriorate in 2009. She became a resident at Royale Meadows Health Center in 2011.
