Winifred Bomgaars, 100, of Sioux Center, Iowa died Saturday, March 03, 2012 at the Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center. A visitation will be held on Monday from 4-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Tuesday at 9:30AM at First Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in the Newkirk Cemetery in Newkirk, Iowa. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday at 11AM in the chapel of First Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev.Van Rathbun officiating. Arrangements are being completed with Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. The Bomgaars family prefer memorials be directed to Hope Haven Ministries or First Reformed Church music department. Winifred Jeanette Bomgaars was born March 13, 1911 to Gerrit and Nellie (Popma) Top on the family farm between Newkirk and Alton, Iowa. She attended school in Newkirk and graduated from the Newkirk Consolidated School. On January 21, 1932, Winifred was joined in marriage to Arie W. Bomgaars in Newkirk. The couple lived in Newkirk where Arie worked for the general store. In 1954, the couple opened the Siouxland Motel on the north end of Sioux Center. They also managed motels for some time in Fremont, Nebraska and Cherokee, Iowa. Winifred and Arie retired to Sioux Center in 1978. Winifred was a member of the Newkirk Reformed church for over 35 years and was a church organist. After retiring to Sioux Center she became a member of First Reformed Church. Winifred loved music and spent her free time playing the piano and organ. She gave music lessons for years and even played the hand bells when she was a resident at Royale Meadows Care Center. She is survived by three children and their spouses: Werna and Peter Ver Mulm of Sioux Center, Galen Dean and Sandra Bomgaars of Denver, CO, and Thelma Kay and Ron Nelson of Tacoma, WA; 14 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Clifford and Sophia Top of Orange City; a sister-in-law, Sophia Slothouber of Sanborn and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Arie Bomgaars; her parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Kathryn and Henry Bomgaars as well as other members of the Bomgaars family.
