Bernard "Jim" Vande Berg, 87, of Hudson, SD died Thursday, February 9, 2012 at the Royal C. John Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. A funeral Service will be held on Monday at 2PM at the Memorial Funeral Home with Father Douglas Klein officiating. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. Bernard James "Jim" Vande Berg was born June 25, 1924 to John B. and Grace (Willemsen) Vande Berg in Sioux Center, Iowa. At the age of 17 Jim began working at Swift & Co. in Sioux City, Iowa assisting beef inspectors. He became an auctioneer at age 18 and worked at area auctions. In his early 20's Jim moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho where he worked for Floyd and Ray Skeleton on their ranches and buying cattle for them. Jim entered the US Army in January of 1951. He served in Korea, where he was injured. After his recuperation, he was stationed in Tokyo, Japan as an Army Beef Inspector. After his honorable discharged with the rank of Sergeant, he lived for a short time in Hawarden, Iowa before moving to Montana and Idaho. He operated his own cattle feedlot and cattle order buying business with his son for several years. Jim was fond of the open spaces and the beauty of the western states. He found enjoyment in hunting and fishing, and had a passion for the cattle business. He settled in Hudson, South Dakota in 1999. He was thankful for the years he was able to live and work with his son, Lynn. Survivors include his son, Lynn Vande Berg of Hudson, SD; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: James Vande Berg and family of Tacoma, WA; Terry Vande Berg of Tacoma, WA, Mark Vande Berg and family of Nampa, ID; Lisa Cisneros and family of Greely, CO. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Don and Wilma Vande Berg of Sioux Center and their two sons: David Vande Berg and his family of Sioux Center and Dean Vande Berg of Westminster, Colorado. Jim was preceded in death by his former wife, Eileen Busch Vande Berg Rindfleisch, five year old son, Rodney and his parents.
