Marvin D. Horn

Marvin Horn, 81, of Boyden, Iowa died Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn. Visitation will be held Friday from 4-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM at the First Reformed Church of Boyden. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10:30AM at the First Reformed Church of Boyden with Rev. Matthew Draffen officiating. Interment will follow the service in Sheridan Township Cemetery of Boyden. Marvin D. Horn, son of Joe A. and Gertrude (Scholten) Horn was born on October 23, 1930 in Boyden, Iowa. He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. Marvin was joined in marriage to Virginia Kruger on November 19, 1957. The couple farmed south of Boyden for 30 years, milking dairy cows, raising hogs, cattle and crops. He was the proud father of three children, Joel, Daniel and Rebecca. He served on many boards in the area including the district, regional and corporate level of AMPI as well as the Iowa Dairy Herd Improvement Association, Iowa Dairy Products Board and the National Milk Board. Over the years he was also active with the First Beef Promotion Board, Sioux County Zoning Commission and the Sioux County Board of Review. Marvin enjoyed singing in a quartet, playing in a bowling league and served as a commander of the William Monster Post 272 of the American Legion. He was a longtime member of the First Reformed Church of Boyden. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Janet Horn of Boyden; and their children: Alisha and Daniel; a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Michael Bower of Harmony, IN; and their children: Matthew, Nathan and his friend Becca, Michael and his friend Shakara, Cody, Virginia, Karli, Waylen and Dannielle; three great-grandchildren: AddaLee Paige, Noah and Emma and fondly remembered as grandpa by Natasha, Wesley and Justin. He is also survived by his four sisters: Joyce Vander Haar of Mesa, AZ; Lois (Peter) Sietstra of Boyden; Mildred Blankers of Sheldon and Bonnie (Scott) Koehler of Delta, CO as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude in 1992; his father Joe, in 1995; his loving wife, Virginia in 1998; his son Daniel, in 1964 and his granddaughter, Courtney in 1994.
