Anna Kempers

Anna Kempers, 96 of Sioux Center died Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at the Hillcrest Health Care Services of Hawarden, Iowa. A visitation will be held Saturday from 4-8PM with the family present from 5-7PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Sunday at 1:30PM at the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2:30PM at the First Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Mark Verbruggen officiating. The Kempers family prefers memorials be directed to the Sioux Center Christian School Kitchen Fund. Anna Kempers was born November 24, 1914 to Dick and Jennie (Zwiers) Calkhoven in Lebanon, Iowa. When she was in fifth grade the family moved to Sioux Center where she completed her grade school and high school education. After graduation she worked at a café for 3 years. Anna was joined in marriage to Albert Kempers on October 1, 1936. The couple lived in Sioux Center on the Kempers family farm. Anna started the hot lunch program at the Sioux Center Christian School, where she was the head cook for 14 years. She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center where she enjoyed worshipping and was an active member of the Golden Hour and other Bible study groups. Her other interests were singing, reading, traveling and being in the kitchen trying new recipes. Survivors include her three children: Lila Kempers, Delaine (Marv) Mulder, Alan (Brenda) Kempers all of Sioux Center; four grandchildren and their spouses and five great grandchildren: Joel and Kristin Mulder (Noah, Isaiah and Elijah) of Sioux Falls, SD, Nathan and Abbey Mulder (Salomae, and Jachin) of Allen, TX, Corey and Shannon Kempers of Sioux Center and Jennifer and Joel Van Otterloo of Sioux Center. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law Katherine Calkhoven of Sioux Center and Shirley Calkhoven of Pompton Plains, NJ; one brother-in-law, Henry Vande Kerk of Grand Rapids, MI as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert on August 13, 1984; her parents; brothers, John Calkhoven and Gary Calkhoven and a sister, Fanny Vande Kerk.
