On his 57th birthday, July 23, 2011 Harlan Niemeyer received the best birthday gift ever- his seat at the Lord's Banquet Table. Ecclesiastes 7:1b states, "and the day of death is better than the day of birth." Harlan celebrated both on that day. After a two week battle with an MRSA infection, the infection won the battle. But, he has "fought the good fight and has won the race." 2 Timothy 4:7 Harlan was born to Gerrit and Helene Niemeyer near Doon, Iowa. Growing up on the farm, fostered a lifelong passion for farming. His siblings are: Glenda (Brian) Hellenga of Little Rock, IA, Judy (Carl) Jansma of Sioux Falls, SD, Ardell (Colleen) Niemeyer of Boyden, IA, Donna (Wendell) Rensink of Elbow Lake, MN, and Lisa (Roger) De Bey of Rock Rapids, IA. On August 4, 1972, he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Jacobsma. Memories of 39 years are the births of their four children. Erica (Chad) Robertson of Carmel, Briana (Jed) Van Der Zwaag of Hospers, Derick (Kim) Niemeyer of Sioux Center, and Andrea (Justin) Soodsma of Hull. Each of the 12 grandchildren: Taylor, Meriah, Tanner, Bryce, Colin, Kinzey, Jayse, Kaden, Brierra, Karsten, Aniya, and Shalyn filled his life with joy. For the past 30 years, Harlan and Marilyn have farmed the Niemeyer family farm near Doon. Besides his passion for farming, Harlan loved woodworking and did custom cabinetry and fireplaces. The Lord was very real to him. He was so blessed in helping others. He loved going on work missions trips every winter. Cursillo weekends also brought him blessings.
