Hans Burgers

October 4, 1917 — May 25, 2011

Hans Burgers, 93 of Sioux Center died Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital. A visitation will be held Friday from 4-8PM with the family present from 5-7PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 1:00PM at Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. John Lee and Rev. Duane Tinklenberg, officiating. Interment will follow the funeral service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center The Burgers family prefer memorials be directed to the Sioux Center American Legion. Hans Burgers was born on October 4, 1917 to Lucas and Judith Burgers and was raised in the Lebanon area. Hans served in World War II from February 19, 1943 to April 28, 1946. He married Alyda Wallenburg on January 18, 1945 in the Lebanon Christian Reformed Church while on a furlough. Hans and Alyda were married 63 years and farmed near Hawarden and Ireton prior to moving to Sioux Center. Hans worked for Addink Corn Schelling, AMPI and Dyna Technology until his retirement. Hans and Alyda were long time members of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. Hans and Alyda enjoyed fishing, traveling to Minnesota and Missouri to visit Larry and Doug and their families, playing cards, and spending time with family. Hans also enjoyed gardening and helping Alyda make potato salad (his job was peeling the potatoes). Following Alyda's death in 2007 Hans remained in his home until moving into Franken Manor on Oct. 10, 2010. Hans continued to go to Doc's Café for breakfast 2 mornings a week where he was respected by many younger friends. Hans was passionate about his service in World War II and so proud to go on the Honor Flight to the Washington World War II Memorial in August of 2010. Hans stated that the experience was incredible but that it was, "It was just too much honor, too much". Hans is survived by three children: Larry and Cheryl (Motley) Burgers of Leigh High, Florida; Lynn Van Putten of Sioux Center; and Doug and Alicia (Mouw) Burgers of Longville, Minnesota; 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren whom he loved spending time with. Also left to cherish his memory are brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law from the Wallenburg family and numerous nieces and nephews. Hans was preceded in death by his loving wife, Alyda (2007); and infant daughter, Carol Ann (1952); his parents, Lucas and Judith (Van Doorn); a son-in-law, Evan Van Putten (2008); his brother, Ernest Burgers; and two sisters: Jennie and Gertrude Louwerse.
