John A. Schelling

John A. Schelling, 75, of Sioux Center, IA died unexpectedly Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital. A visitation will be held Monday from 2-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2PM at the Netherlands Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. H. Hofman, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center, IA. The Schelling family requests no flowers, memorials are preferred to the Netherlands Reformed Christian School of Rock Valley. John Albert Schelling was born near Maurice, Iowa on February 19, 1935 to B.D. and Marie (Ymker) Schelling. John was raised near Maurice, Ireton and Rock Valley, Iowa, attending country school through the eighth grade. As a young man John began working for farmers in the Rock Valley area. In 1953, he moved to Armour, South Dakota where he continued to work as a farm hand. John was united in marriage to Corrie den Hoed in Grand Rapids, Michigan on February 19, 1958. Following their marriage John and Corrie farmed together near Armour for eight years before moving to farm near Rock Valley in 1966. In 1983, John and Corrie settled on the West edge of Sioux Center, Iowa where John operated the Country Bike Shop and worked for the Sioux Center Walmart for 19 years. In addition, for the past 24 years he served as custodian for the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Sioux Center. John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Corrie Schelling of Sioux Center; two sisters: Hattie Hubers of Rock Valley and Betty Powell of Corsica, SD; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Marlene and Clarence Zomer of Sioux Falls, SD and Minnie Jean and Ivan Van Der Werff of Armour, SD; a brother and sister-in-law, Cornie and Jean Schelling of Corsica, SD; two sisters-in-law: Marian Schelling of Sioux Falls, SD and Shirley Weisser and her husband, Leroy of Delmont, SD along with numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Rochus and Lambert Schelling and two brothers-in-law: Harold Hubers and Frank Powell.
