Nellie De Weerd - Altena , 7/20/1930 to 9/20/2010 NELLIE DE WEERD-ALTENA, 80, of Sioux Center, IA died Monday, September 20, 2010 at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center, IA. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A prayer service for family and friends will be held Thursday at 1:00PM at Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2PM at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, with Rev. John Lee and Rev. Duane Tinklenberg officiating. Memorials are preferred to CHEARS Home Health and Hospice. Nellie De Weerd - Altena was born July 20, 1930 to Wm. C and Dena (Vander Weide) De Vos on their Lyon Co. Iowa farm. On March 9, 1951, she was joined in marriage to Hilbert De Weerd. The couple farmed on the north edge of Sioux Center their entire married life. To this union six children were born. Hilbert died on July 14, 1997. Nellie married Senard Altena on January 2, 1999. Nellie was a member of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center and was active with the ladies aid. In her free time she enjoyed baking, cooking and playing cards with her friends. She was fond of flowers and loved to spend time with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Priscilla (Mark) Jansma of Maurice, Larry (Donna) De Weerd of Sioux Center, Verlyn (Arletta) De Weerd of Sioux Center, Muriel Betsill of Jonesboro, GA, Brad (Emalee) De Weerd of Sioux Center; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 2 step children, Stan (Barb) Altena of Sioux Center, and Nelvina (Paul) Weg of Mesa, AZ; 6 step grandchildren and 12 step great-grandchildren. Also left to cherish her memory are three brothers: Cornie (Elizabeth) De Vos of Hull, Clarence (Margie) De Vos of Jackson, MS, Harold (Sharon) De Vos of Rock Rapids, Iowa; sister, Wilma (Harold) Kuiken of Sioux Center as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Those who preceded her in death are her husbands, Hilbert De Weerd and Senard Altena; son, Alvin De Weerd; sister, Dorothy (Sam) Klein and sister-in-law, June De Vos.
