Sue Van Schouwen

Sue Van Schouwen, 94, of Sioux Center, IA died Thursday, July 8, 2010 at the Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center. A visitation will be held Sunday from 2-8PM, with the family present from 2:30-4:30PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A prayer service will be held Monday at 10:00 AM at Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. A memorial service will be held Monday at 11:00AM at Bethel Christian Reformed Church with Rev. John Lee and Rev. Duane Tinklenberg officiating. The Van Schouwen family prefers memorials to Sioux Center Christian School. Sue Van Schouwen was born December 2, 1915 to Sam and Gertrude Walstra in Fair Oaks, IN. She attended Rose Lawn Schools in De Motte, IN through the eighth grade. She later graduated from the Reformed Bible Institute in Grand Rapids, MI. For three years she taught at the Mission School in Hammond, IN. On June 8, 1951, Sue married Rev. Cornelius Van Schouwen at De Motte. The couple moved to Sioux Center in 1954 when Cornelius accepted a position with the newly established Dordt College. Sue was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center where she taught many years of Sunday school, catechism, Bible studies and Friendship Bible. She always believed that her greatest calling was to be a Christian wife, mother and grandmother. In her free time, Sue enjoyed crocheting afghans and hot pads. She had a strong interest in politics and was known for her hospitality. Sue acted as a second "mom" for many Dordt College students over the years. She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law: Neil and Pat Van Schouwen, Joe and Shar Van Schouwen all of Sioux Center; daughter and son-in-law, Susann and Paul De Stigter of Frankfurt, Germany; grandchildren: Matt (Karen) Van Schouwen and their children, Tyler, Ryan, Kyra and Ayva; Brad (Summer) Van Schouwen; Dave Van Schouwen and his friend, Mandy Van Kley; Adam Van Schouwen; Jason (Sandra) De Stigter; Sheila (Josh) Van Essen; Lindsey De Stigter; Chris De Stigter; Josh (Carlene) Van Schouwen; Daniel Van Schouwen and Jacob Van Schouwen; a brother, Elmer Walstra of Waupun, WI; a sister, Mildred Walstra of De Motte, IN and numerous nieces and nephews. Sue was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Peter S. and Elizabeth Walstra; sister and brother-in-law, Sena and George Nannenga and sister-in-law, Rose Walstra Online Condolences Andy & Jolene Visser Brinnon Relationship: friends It was special seeing your mom just last week sitting in the hallway.
