William "Bill" Horstman was born at home, Nov. 14, 1930 to Joe and Reka (Hulstein) Horstman. He died June 23, 2010 at the age of 79 years. He attended Plato Township #5 country school, west of Carmel, through the 8th grade. Bill married Gertrude Van Ravenswaay July 20, 1951 at the Carmel Reformed Church parsonage. Bill and Gert lived on two different farms before moving onto the home farm in 1957. He continued farming even after moving to Sioux Center in 1993. After retiring from farming, he continued working at Link Manufacturing and later at TriState Livestock. His love of farming was evident by his leathered hands and the long hours he maintained. He worked hard, often helping neighbors in need. He was a lifelong member of Carmel Reformed Church where he served as a deacon. He moved to Crown Pointe Assisted Living in April 2009 and joined Gert at Royal Meadows Care Center in June 2009, where he resided until his death. He is survived by his wife, Gert of Sioux Center; five children and their families: daughter, Amy Hassebroek of Worthington, MN and her daughters, Megan Milstead and her children, McKenzie & Paige of Balaton, MN and Briana and Chris Behrens of Marshalltown, IA; son, Ron Horstman of Lakewood, CO and his children, Brittney and Nelson Alfaro of Miami, FL, Shalee Horstman of Lakewood, CO and Keegan Horstman of Sioux Center; son, Earl Horstman and his fiancé, Jody Eggers of Canton, SD and her children, Jennifer and Jesse Johnson and their daughters, Ashlen & Ayleah of Yankton, SD and Kari Eggers of Sioux Falls, SD; son, Mark and Joyce Horstman and their sons, Jesse and Alex of Beresford, SD; son, John and Jolene Horstman and their daughters, Amanda, McKayla and Tara of Sioux Center. Also left to cherish his memory are a brother, Gerrit and Ruth Horstman of Sioux Center; sister, Evelyn and Leon Koele of Sheldon, IA; sisters-in-law, Shirley Van Ravenswaay of Montevideo, MN, Carol and Gerrit Koedam of Mesa, AZ, Alma and Charles Warren, Rena and John Van Voorst, Sandra Van Ravenswaay all of Sioux Center, Mary and Ed Zuschlag of Westminster, CO; brother-in-law, Junior Dooyema of Sioux Center; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: Jerry and Morris; parents-in-law, Anthony and Gerdena Van Ravenswaay; brothers-in-law, Rich, Harold, Ralph and Anthony Van Ravenswaay and sister-in-law, Alice Dooyema. Then I realized that it is good and proper for a man to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given him.
