She was raised in Rock Valley, Iowa and attended Rock Valley schools. Irene married Henry Dokter on June 5, 1951 at the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley. For the first few years of their marriage, Irene traveled with Henry during his time in the service. The couple later made their home in Sioux Center, Iowa to raise their family. Irene stayed home with her children for many years before going to work at Holiday Lanes Bowling Alley in Sioux Center with her sister and brother-in-law, where she made her homemade soup and cleaned. For 20 years, Irene worked side by side with her husband Henry as custodians at the church they dearly loved Bethel Christian Reformed Church. Irene was a member of the Harmony Circle and was a charter member of the Mr. and Mrs. Club. During her active life, Irene enjoyed her bowling team, reading, playing cards, going out for supper with their card club, fishing and camping with friends and relatives and spending time at ball games with her children and grandchildren. Her family will always be grateful for the love and concern she showed for all of them, for the fun and laughter they shared, and for the living testimony of her faith in Christ.
