Dave Wiersma

May 6, 1950 — February 19, 2010

David L. Wiersma, 59, of Hull died Friday, February 19, 2010 at the Hegg Memorial Health Center of Rock Valley. Visitation will be held Monday from 4-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM at the Hull Protestant Reformed Church of Hull, IA. A Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 1:30PM at the Hull Protestant Reformed Church with Rev. Steven Key officiating with interment to follow in Hope Cemetery of Hull. David Leo Wiersma was born May 6, 1950, in Sibley, IA, the oldest of eleven children born to Bernard and Hanna (Prins) Wiersma. Dave attended Sibley High School and went on to receive training as a certified mechanic from Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon. On September 17, 1971, he was united in marriage to Helinda Joyce De Jong at the Hull Protestant Reformed Church. Dave and Helinda were blessed with five children. Dave was the only one of Bernard and Hanna's children who became a John Deere mechanic like his father. He began his mechanics career working for Bernie Oldenkamp at Oldenkamp's Phillips 66 on Hwy. 59 in Allendorf, IA. He worked for Reynold Huff Implement in Sheldon and later Schnepf Lumber in Sibley. In 1978, he and Helinda moved their family to Doon, IA, where Dave began working for Tri-State Implement. After 10 years or more there, he took a position at Town & Country Implement in Rock Valley. He was last employed at Sioux-Lyon Implement of Doon. In 2006, he and Helinda settled in Hull, IA. Dave was a member of the Hull Protestant Reformed Church. He enjoyed many outdoor activities including camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, and working on his lawn and in his garden. Dave discovered his gift of working with his hands as a young man while working on his uncle's farm. He was a talented mechanic and after work was fond of working on his own cars. He built an addition on his home as a shop and designed his own shop equipment where he fixed just about anything over the years. One of his favorite things to do was spend time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing pinochle and cribbage, especially at Christmas with his brothers. He was also on the Rescue Unit for many years. Dave is survived by his wife, Helinda of Hull; three daughters: Monica Wiersma and Stacy Wiersma both of Rock Valley and Hilary Wiersma of Hull; two sons and daughters-in-law: Daniel and Melissa Wiersma of Sheldon and Benjamin and Lisa Wiersma of Orange City; two grandsons: Matthew and David; and granddaughter: Amanda.
