Nellie Hengeveld

Nellie Hengeveld, 93, of Sioux Center died Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 5-7PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A prayer service for family and friends will be held Wednesday at 10AM at First Christian Reformed Church with interment to follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11AM at First Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Mark Verbruggen officiating. The Hengeveld family prefers memorials be directed to area Christian Schools. Nellie (De Jong) Hengeveld was born September 4, 1916 in Perkins, Iowa to Ike and Grace De Zeeuw) De Jong. She was raised in Orange City, Iowa where she attended the Orange City Christian School through the eighth grade. As a young woman, Nellie worked at Kalsbeek Grocery in Orange City and as a housekeeper. Nellie was united in marriage to Theodore G. Hengeveld at a service in her parent's home. Ted preceded her in death on May 10, 2003. Following their marriage Nellie and Ted settled at Carnes, Iowa where they operated Ted's Standard Service on US Highway 60. Nellie also bused special needs students each day to Sioux Center Public Schools; a position she lovingly held for 27 years. She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Orange City while living at Carnes; she was active with Monica Society and other church societies. Upon their retirement she and Ted moved to Sioux Center where they became members of the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Some of the things Nellie most enjoyed throughout her life were singing in quartets, quilting, cooking, sewing and spending time at their cabin on Silver Lake with her children and grandchildren. Surviving are her three children and their spouses: Garneth and Ron Lighthiser, Helene and Marv Rietema and Ted and Rachel Hengeveld all of Sioux Center along with her 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Nellie is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Henry Smeenk of Grandville, MI; sister-in-law, Retta De Jong of Orange City; brother-in-law, Bill Hengeveld of Sheldon; two sisters-in-law: Minne De Hoogh of Sheldon and Marge Hengeveld of Hartley and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Nellie was preceded in death by an infant son, Theodore; her parents; siblings: Henrietta and Jake Mantel, Elsie and Tim Bruxvoort, Jeanette and Pete Bylsma, Gertrude De Jong, Tom and Tina De Jong, Gilbert De Jong; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry and Alyda Hengeveld; and her Hengeveld in-laws: Henry Hengeveld, Jr., John and Gertrude Hengeveld, Dora and Otto Postma, Lyda and Clarence Victoria, Joe Hengeveld, Jerry De Hoogh and Katherine Hengeveld.
