Elvin Norman was born February 10, 1915 in Fulton IL, the son of Edward and Lizzie (Pompstra) Norman. He, his brother and two sisters were raised in Fulton where he graduated from Fulton High School. Elvin then studied business and accounting for a short time.
On May 24, 1940 he was united in marriage to Eunice De Weerdt in Fulton. Three years later, Elvin entered the US Navy. He was trained as a radar instructor and taught new enlistments radar reading fundamentals on the campus of Texas A & M during World War II. Upon his return to Fulton, Elvin began working for the Curtis Company of Clinton, IA, eventually becoming plant manager. He then joined Medical Associates Medical Clinic in Clinton as the clinic manager. Elvin and Eunice were blessed with two daughters and throughout their lives they exemplified a Christian marriage. Eunice preceded Elvin in death on August 10, 2006.
While living in Fulton all those years, Elvin was a member of 2nd Reformed Church where he served the Lord as elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and sang in choir. He was dedicated to the Fulton community. He served on the Fulton School board for 21 years and on the board of directors for Harbor Crest Home. Elvin was also a gifted craftsman, as evidenced by building two brick homes for his family, countless sets of cupboards, furniture, and other woodworking projects. His spare time was occupied by golf, bowling, creating beautiful stained glass items, and extensive reading about topics of the day. He dearly loved his country, as shown by many letters of encouragement to his congressmen and endless donations to causes close to his heart. How appropriate that he left this earthly world on Patriot Day.
After retiring in the early 1980's Eunice and Elvin moved to Sioux Center, IA to be near their daughters and their precious families. Their church membership was transferred to First Reformed Church of Sioux Center, where Elvin participated on the Social Concerns Committee.
Left to cherish his memory are his two daughters and sons-in-law: Linda and Dick Lineweaver of Arnolds Park and Diane and Vern Den Herder of Sioux Center along with his seven grandchildren: Lance (Shelly) Kooiker of Granger, IA, Evan (Sherry) Kooiker of Pingree Grove, IL, Aaron (Michelle) Kooiker of Granger, IA, Matthew (Barbara) Den Herder of Sioux Center, Carissa (David) Lemke of Sioux Center; Cole (Julia) Lineweaver of Spencer and Eric (Tammy) Lineweaver of Milford; 13 great grandchildren: Jadyn, Lane, Ashton, London, Elliot Kooiker; Collin, Avery, Ayda Den Herder; Austin, Blake Lineweaver and Leslie, Emily, Betsy Lineweaver and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Eunice, he was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Josephine and Anthony Prins and Etta and Henry Tiesman and a brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Cora Mae Norman.
