ANDREW SIPMA, 97, of Sheldon, IA, formerly of Hull, IA, died Sunday, September 13, 2009 at Sanford Senior Care Center in Sheldon.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11AM at the First Christian Reformed Church of Hull, with Rev. Carl Klompien officiating. Interment will prior to the memorial service in Hope Cemetery of Hull.

A prayer service will be held Wednesday at 10AM at the First Christian Reformed Church of Hull.

A visitation will be held Tuesday at the First Christian Reformed Church of Hull from 4-8pm, with the family present from 6-8PM.

The Sipma family prefers memorials to Sanford Home Health and Hospice of Sheldon.



Andrew Dick Sipma was born March 26, 1912 to Dick and Florence (Elgersma) Sipma near Sanborn, Iowa. Andrew attended a nearby country school.

On April 5, 1938 he was united in marriage to Tillie Oldenkamp at her parents home in Sanborn. Following their marriage, Andrew and Tillie lived in Sanborn. On December 15, 1942 Andrew enlisted into the US Navy. He served 35 months during World War II earning the rank of Carpenter 2nd Class. He primarily repaired Invasion Craft while stationed in North Africa and England. After receiving his honorable discharge he and Tillie moved to Princeton, Missouri were they farmed for a year and a half before moving to Perkins, Iowa. While living in Perkins, Andrew began his long career as a self-employed carpenter, building barns, homes and graineries.

Andrew and Tillie then headed west to settle in Bellflower, California for ten years, before moving to Sheldon, Iowa where they operated the King Korner Caf for a year and a half. They returned to Bellflower for another ten years before settling in Hull, Iowa. They were residents of Hull for 29 years until they were welcomed into the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon.

While living in Bellflower Andrew did remodeling for others and in homes he and Tillie owned. Since living in Hull, Andrew stayed busy doing small carpentry jobs and during his retirement years built many Dutch windmill lawn ornaments.

Andrew is survived by his wife of 71 years, Tillie Sipma of Sheldon; a sister, Elizabeth Van Rees of Jenison, MI; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and William Baker of Dorr, MI; sister-in-law, Catherine Sipma of Worthington, MN; sister-in-law, Elsie Snuttjer of Prairie du Chien, WI; brother-in-law, Gerrit Oldenkamp of Hull; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harold and Albertha Oldenkamp of Ontario, CA; sister-in-law, Hattie Oldenkamp of Ripon, CA along with several nieces and nephews.

Andrew was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Raymond Sipma; sister, Gertrude De Groot; sister-in-law Josephine Oldenkamp andfour brothers-in-law: Jake Van Rees, George De Groot Sr., John Oldenkamp and Peter Snuttjer.
