John De Jong

John M. De Jong, 78, of Maurice, IA died Sunday, July 19, 2009, at the Orange City Area Health System.

A funeral service will be held Thursday at 10:30AM at the Maurice First Reformed Church of Maurice, IA with Rev. Mark Haverdink officiating. Interment will follow in Sherman Township Cemetery of rural Maurice.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.



The De Jong family prefers memorials be directed to Maurice Reformed Church Building Fund.



John M. De Jong was born in Plymouth County, Iowa on July 12, 1931, to Dick and Gertrude (Schruer) De Jong. He was raised in Maurice, Iowa and completed his formal education in the Maurice Public School System. He was a member of the graduating class of 1949. John was a baptized member of the Maurice Reformed Church and served as Sunday School Secretary.



On November 5, 1952, John took Leola Van Peursem as his bride and they were married in the Maurice Reformed Church. From 1953 to 1955, John served in the U.S. Army. He completed basic training in Fort Sill, Oklahoma and then completed a tour of duty in Okinawa, Japan. During the early years John worked at Stan's Produce, and then farmed for 7 years. In 1959, he began to measure land for the United States Department of Agriculture and later became Chief Clerk for the U.S.D.A. in Orange City. John retired from this position in 1991 after 32 years.



John's hobbies when younger revolved around playing sports. After the first grandson showed up in 1979, John's hobbies could easily be assigned to two categories, his grandsons and collecting toys and antiques. From winter to spring John could be found in California where he was a front row spectator at the grandson's baseball and basketball games whether amateur or professional.



John is survived by his wife of 57 years and two sons and their wives; Rod and Kris De Jong of Corona, CA and Clayton and Bonnie De Jong of Long Beach, CA; five grandsons: Jordan and his wife Keisha, Anthony and his wife Lauren, all of Yorba Linda, CA, Tyler, Blake and Chase De Jong of Long Beach, CA. He is also survived by one great grandson, Jordan's son Jayce. John's surviving siblings include: sisters: Greta and John De Zeeuw and Nelvina and Gerald Wissink of Sioux Center; brothers: Mike and Neva Jean De Jong of Gifford, Washington and Nelson De Jong of Sun City, Arizona; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dean and Gladys Van Peursem of Snohomish, WA and brother-in-law Perry Jager of Maurice. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.



In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by brother and sister-in-law, Pierce and Alma De Jong.
