Alice De Groot

March 10, 1915 — June 8, 2009

Alice De Groot, 94, of Sioux Center died Monday June 8, 2009 at the Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11AM at Faith Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4-9PM with the family present from 8-9PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.


The De Groot family prefers memorials be directed to Sioux Center Christian School or Sioux Center Community Hospital Foundation.


Alice (Addink) De Groot was born March 10, 1915 to John and Jennie (Lammers) Addink on the family farm west of Sioux Center. She attended country school through the eighth grade and always enjoyed helping out on the farm. She spent many days working alongside her family with their chicken business. She also enjoyed playing softball.

On February 3, 1938, Alice married Peter De Groot. The couple first farmed south of Sioux Center until 1952, then west of Sioux Center where they farmed until they retired in 1977. After Peter passed away on November 28, 1985, Alice continued living in their Sioux Center home until March of 2007, when she became a resident of Royale Meadows Care Center.

Alice was a longtime member of Faith Christian Reformed Church. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo with friends. She liked fishing and listening to her Chicago Cubs.

She is survived by her three children: Agnes Noop De Groot, John P. and his wife, Marlys De Groot and Allan De Groot all of Sioux Center; four grandchildren and their families: Paul and Sharon DeGroot of Manchester, MO and their children: Brianna, Joshua and Luke; Jodi and Tom Holman of Medfield, MA and their children: David John, Jessica, Nicholas and Matthew; Judy and Duane Hulstein of Orange City and their children: Christopher, Jacquelyn and Kaitlyn; John and Fonda De Groot of Sioux Center and their children: Raymond and Savannah. Also left to cherish Alices memory are sister, Hattie Verdoorn of Newkirk; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dick and Hilda Addink of Sioux Center, Henry and Mary Addink of Orange City; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Marion and Sadie Van Peursem of Orange City, brother-in-law, Cornie Vander Stelt of Sioux Center and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Alice in death were her husband, Peter De Groot; her parents; grandson, Carl John De Groot; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dena and Albert Van Riessen, Gert and John De Groot, Minnie and John Byl; sister-in-law, Dorothy Vander Stelt; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Janet and Gene Wagner and Elsie and Alfred Wissink.
