Norman Matheis (83) was born to Jack and Jacoba (Meijer) Matheis on February 8, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was raised. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1944-46. Norm studied at Kendall School of Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan; and apprenticed for three years with Dr. Alexander Zlatoff Mirsky in Chicago, IL. He later attended Calvin College, and received an MFA from the University of Michigan. He taught at Kendall School of Design, Calvin College, and Dordt College in Sioux Center until his retirement in 1989.

He married Shirley Olthuis in Neerlandia, Alberta on August 23, 1957.

Supremely gifted and confident as an artist, yet uncommonly modest and unassuming in manner, Norm in his quiet way influenced the lives of many. Norm was a very private man with a wry sense of humor, a man of few words whose work and actions spoke for him. Personally frugal, he shared his work generously. A man of strong faith, Norms overarching concern was that every part of his life--especially his artwork--would please the Lord and reflect His glory. His prayer was always that his children and grandchildren would have that same assurance of faith and the same desire to serve the Lord.

Norm was a gentle, patient father and grandfather, much loved by his family. He will be greatly missed by those who were privileged to know him intimately:

his wife of 51 1/2 years Shirley Matheis of Sioux Center; his children: Jeff and Kristy Matheis of Boise, ID, Ellen and Dave Mouw and Ken Matheis all of Sioux Center; his grandchildren: Julie Matheis and fianc, Adam Roth of Waterloo, IA, Lindsay, Mitchell, Anna and Hudson Mouw all of Sioux Center; step-grandchildren: Sherri and Heath Harper of Copperas Cove, TX, Theresa and Todd McDonough of Boise, ID, AJ and Amanda Balderrama of Mountain Home, ID; 11 step great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Jack and Jean Matheis of Lynden, WA and Dennis and MaryAnn Matheis of Grand Rapids, MI; sister, Kathleen Smith of Cleveland, OH; and former daughter-in-law and her husband, Joyce and Kevin Zubrod of Sutherland, IA.

Also left to cherish Normans memory are in-laws: Elsie Navis, Joan and Ralph Bos all of Barrhead, AB, Jack and Glory Ann Olthuis of Big Rapids, MI, Clarence and Rose Olthuis, Fred and Sandra Olthuis all of Neerlandia, AB, Stan and Joanne Olthuis of Toronto, ON, and Linda Olthuis of Barrhead, AB as well as many nieces and nephews and their children.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother and sister-in-law, George and Irene Matheis; brother-in-law, Henk Navis and an infant granddaughter.
