Mary Hulstein was born in Orange City, Iowa on June 15, 1918, the daughter of Herman and Nelji (Oesthoek) Kluis. She often said she missed the boat because her parents and all her siblings came over on a ship from the Netherlands. During her childhood her family moved eleven times in thirteen years; mostly in the Slayton, Lake Wilson and Chandler, Minnesota areas, but also a couple of places in Iowa near Orange City.

As a young woman, Mary supported the World War II effort by helping to build B24 airplanes in a converted factory in Detroit, Michigan. After the war she returned to Orange City where she worked in a bakery with her father and at a grocery store. On August 16, 1946 she was united in marriage to William C. Hulstein in Orange City. Bill preceded her in death on February 6, 2000. The couple settled on a farm four miles northeast of Sioux Center, Iowa where they raised their two children.

Mary and Bill farmed until their retirement in 1979. At that time they moved to a home in Sioux Center, enjoying many winter seasons in Texas with friends. Throughout her life, Mary was fond of gardening and growing flowers. She enjoyed working outdoors and often helped Bill with fieldwork. Mary liked baking and was always trying new recipes. Spare time was spent playing cards with friends, bowling and doing embroidery. She became a resident of Sheldon Sanford Senior care in October of 2007.

Mary is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Linda Hulstein of Hull; daughter and son-in-law, Rhoda and Roger Klein of Hull; her 7 grandchildren: Ann (Justin) Hickson of Eagan, MN, Matt (Alethea) Hulstein of Sioux Center, Mark (Sara) Hulstein of Sioux Center, Amy (Nathan Strenge) Hulstein of Sioux Falls, Jaime (Jeremy) Te Grotenhuis of Sioux Falls, Angie (Jeremy) Rempfer of Scotland, SD, Mike (Alicia) Klein of Hull; and 11 great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Henrietta Kluis of Chandler, MN and Arta Jans of Sioux Center along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her step mother, Louisa Kluis; brothers and sisters-in-law: Dick and Bertha Kluis of Maurice and Arie and Erma Kluis of Slayton; a brother, Felix Kluis of Slayton; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Dallas Granda of Indian River, MI.
