Emlyn De Stigter

December 24, 1953 — January 2, 2009

Emlyn "Emmy" De Stigter, 55, of Sioux Center died Friday, January 2, 2009 unexpectedly, but peacefully at her parents home.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10:30AM at First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Carl Klompien officiating. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-9PM, with the family present from 7-9PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The De Stigter Family prefers memorials be directed to The Hope Haven Foundation, Rock Valley, IA.



Emlyn Francine De Stigter was born December 24, 1953 in Sioux Center, Iowa, the daughter of Leonard and Ella (Mulder) De Stigter.

Emmy attended Hope Center in Sioux Center until the age of 10. She then became one of the first pupils of Hope Havens special education program in Rock Valley. After graduating in 1975 she joined Hope Havens Work Training Program. She lived at home until age 36. In 1990, she moved to a group home at the Northside Court in Hull. After 3 years she settled into a supervised apartment at Ridgebrook in Sioux Center.

Emlyn was a faithful member of First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center where she loved to sing and meet her friends. She also enjoyed being a part of the Friendship Class. She loved her Lord and made public profession of faith in 1984.

She enjoyed knitting scarves and working in her puzzle books. She also loved bowling and going to Special Olympics. She received many medals over the years for swimming and softball.

Emlyn loved her family and always enjoyed spending time with them on Sundays, holidays and special occasions. Emmy was very social and had an outgoing personality.

Those left to cherish her memory are her parents, Leonard and Ella De Stigter of Sioux Center; 3 brothers: Thane De Stigter of Loveland, CO, Phil and Bonnie De Stigter of Sioux Center, Paul and Sue De Stigter of Ramstein, Germany; two sisters: Sonja and Dick Sander of Aurora, CO, Elaine and Larry Meyer of Oakdale, PA and her numerous nieces and nephews.

Emyln is preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Joann De Stigter.
