Gilmer Arlyn Nyhof was born on July 3, 1939 to Gerrit and Gertrude (Vande Kieft) Nyhof near Ireton, IA and he was raised on a farm near Sioux Center, IA. Gilmer received an education through the 8th grade from Sioux Center Christian School. He was united in marriage to Gladyce Jean Vos on August 12, 1960, at the Christian Reformed Church in Sully, IA.
The majority of Gilmers life was spent living and working on a farm east of Sioux Center until his retirement in 2000 when he and Gladyce took up residence in Sioux Center. After his retirement from the farm, Gilmer owned his own grain truck for a time to haul corn for local farmers.
Along with farming, Gilmers interests included hunting and gun collecting. Gilmers enthusiasm led him to create Gilmers Gunshop in 1975, which he owned and operated until his death. He spent many hours working in his room in the basement with his guns and reloading shells; something he really enjoyed doing the last years.
Gilmer was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center for his entire life.
