Gary Verrips

Gary Verrips, 90, formerly of Sioux Center, IA died Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at the Rock Rapids Health Centre.

A Funeral service will be held Saturday at 2PM at the Central Reformed church of Sioux Center with Rev. R. Van Rathbun officiating. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation with the family present will be held on Saturday starting at 12:30 PM at the Central Reformed Church.

The Verrips Family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Soceity.



Gary H. Verrips was born April 22, 1918, to Peter and Nellie (Bomgaars) Verrips at home in Middleburgh, Iowa. He attended country school until his parents moved to Sioux Center, Iowa where he graduated from Sioux Center High School.

After graduation Gary worked for Wandscheer Manufacturing Company in Sioux Center until he joined the U.S. Army Air Force in April 1941. He received basic training at March Field Airbase, California. When World War II broke out he was deployed to England, France, Italy and North Africa, serving in supply with the 49th Pursuit Squadron F. Gary attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and served three years overseas during World War II.

After his honorable discharge in April 1945 Gary married Gladys Abma. He went into business with a partner and started Sioux Auto Body Shop in Sioux Center. After ten years in the body and fender business, Gary an avid hunter and fisherman, got the burning desire to own a fishing resort. In 1955, he sold his half of the business to his partner and purchased a resort on Big Sandy Lake near McGregor in northern Minnesota. Gary and his family operated Verrips Resort until 1977, when they sold the resort and retired. Gary kept busy hunting, fishing, gardening and doing woodworking projects.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years Gladys of Sioux Center; two sons: Donald Verrips of Walton, Kentucky and Stanley Verrips and his wife, Sylvia of Boise, Idaho; two grandchildren: Jesse Verrips and his wife, Casandra of Boise, Idaho and Lael Verrips of Winneabago, Minnesota; three great-grandchildren: Richard, Laney and Henry and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Arie Verrips.
